What is Internal Family Systems?
Internal Family Systems is a gentle and powerful therapy.
We often feel overwhelmed by conflicting thoughts and feelings. Part of us longs to go home for the holidays. Another part of us would rather not. These conflicting feelings naturally lead to confusion. We feel as though we shouldn't be conflicted, confused, etc. Sorting through all of these thoughts and feelings can be exhausting.
IFS looks to these parts for answers. Led by Whole Self energy--compassion and curiosity, among other caring traits--I help you see more clearly the parts of yourself which are strongly influencing, even overtaking, your life. In session we ask a part (or parts) questions and they respond, often giving surprising answers. I do not pressure the part to change, I simply facilitate a deeper understanding. With my Whole Self energy I communicate a lot of gratitude and connection to these parts; everyone is vulnerable when they allow themselves to be seen and understood, even parts, and I admire their courage.
How Internal Family Systens Can Help You Heal
What you'll notice through IFS is an easing of overwhelm and anxiety. You will gain more access to your own Whole Self energy, which is a calm and clear way of being in the world. Seeing your parts with compassion and curiosity helps the parts change from maladaptive to adaptive; it eases their burdens; it allows you to appreciate them, honor them, and even love them. The parts will shift and change and your life will shift and change as a result. You'll also be practicing self-compassion and self-love; that is a very good thing.
